Who We Are
You can sum up CPC in one simple sentence:
We are a family in Christ who through our relationship with Him and love of His word reach out to all people.
But what does this mean?
We are a family This is a very important phrase which speaks loudly in today’s individualistic culture. The Biblical picture is that we are people who have been adopted into God’s family, with Him as our Father and us as brothers and sisters (Rom 8:12-17). This means that we are connected to one another, and we want this to be evident in all that we do. It also means that each person is an important and valued family member.
in Christ It is important for us to remember that we are in Christ and not simply ‘religious’ people (1 Cor 1:30). We are new creations through the death and resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ. He is at the centre of both Caringbah Presbyterian Church and each of our lives. We are not Christians in name only, but we have tasted the mercy and grace of our Saviour. Whatever we do and however we express ourselves, CPC must represent its identity as people made one with our Lord, who is Head of this church.
who through our relationship with Him Jesus is not just an agent of or a formula for salvation, but He is the one who is powerfully at work within and through us now (Gal 2:20). Christ not only saves, but He walks alongside, grows, sustains, intercedes, convicts, equips, strengthens and loves. CPC is not a church of people who have come to know Jesus through head knowledge only, but He dwells in our hearts through faith and His Holy Spirit (Eph 3:16-17). Empowered by Him, we work together for His glory and kingdom.
and love of His word At CPC we believe that God’s word really matters. Through the Bible, our living God reveals Himself and His purposes. So we seek not only to understand the word, but to submit to it and joyfully engage with it (Col 3:16). This phrase highlights how we want to be taught and instructed by the Bible in all that we do, and it celebrates how our Father speaks into our lives and church.
reach out We desire to see CPC truly reaching out and evangelising. We have the greatest news to share, and we want to see many embrace it. It is our aim to continue to invest in outreach ministries so that we can connect with our community and beyond, so they can also come to know Jesus for themselves (Matt 28:18-20).
to all people Sometimes in an effort to modernise, churches leave the past behind or focus entirely on one people group or age range. That is not CPC’s agenda. We want Caringbah Presbyterian Church to be a place where all people are welcomed, where the old are respected and suitable things from the past are preserved, and where at the same time the young are valued as the church moves forward in the 21st century. We also acknowledge that Australia is a place of diverse nationalities, and that many people groups live in our neighbourhoods. We want CPC to be a family where people of all cultures and backgrounds are welcomed (consider the scope of peoples in Rev 7:9-10). Our current ESL ministry is just one example of this in action.
